Parks, YMCA, travel clubs, and how school teams work

Youth sports in Clark County

Youth sports in Clark County split into two systems, and mixing them up is how kids miss a season. CCSD school teams are the public-school path: tryouts, an NIAA-required sports physical, and paperwork to that school's athletic director. Rec leagues run through city and county parks departments, the YMCA of Southern Nevada and private clubs, with their own signups and fees. Pick the path first, then the sport.

School team or rec league?

  • Want them to play for their CCSD school → school team. Start with that school's athletic director.
  • Younger child or first time in a sport → a parks or YMCA rec league in your city: City of Las Vegas, Clark County, Henderson or North Las Vegas.
  • Already serious and wants more games → a club or travel team, on top of or instead of school.

Before they can practice (CCSD school teams)

No packet, no practice.

  • Current sports physical on file, as required by the NIAA
  • Parent permission / participation forms
  • Concussion and emergency forms
  • Turn the packet in to that school's athletic office before the first practice

Ask the school which forms it uses and whether they are submitted online.

Seasons (high school typical)

  • Fall — football, soccer, volleyball, cross country, golf, field hockey
  • Winter — basketball, wrestling, swimming, bowling, cheer
  • Spring — baseball, softball, track, tennis, lacrosse, archery
  • Cheer and dance often run more than one season

Middle school sports and start dates vary by school. Ask the office what they field this year.

Rules parents miss

  • New to the school or transferred → confirm eligibility with the school and the NIAA before they play
  • Grades and age rules apply
  • Extreme heat and lightning can cancel outdoor practice and games
  • Club season does not excuse missed school practices
