The lottery screen will say Selected, Alternate Pool, or Not Qualified. Each one asks something different of a CCSD family.

After the Tuesday, January 12, 2027, 3:00 p.m. deadline, Clark County School District runs a computerized random lottery for Magnet and Open Enrollment seats, then notifies families by email or text that results are ready in the SchoolMint School Choice application. The lottery and notice steps are on the Magnet application process page and the Open Enrollment process page (both checked Tuesday, October 13, 2026).

Only Open Enrollment puts a season on it. The Open Enrollment FAQs say the district sends written notice "prior to Spring Break," which starts after classes Friday, March 12, 2027. The Magnet pages give no results date. For a reference point, the district's newsroom post Answering Magnet Lottery Questions says last cycle's Magnet lottery results went to families on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Changes stop at the deadline. Both the Magnet and Open Enrollment process pages say changes are allowed only before the deadline, and both tell families to check for the submission confirmation email.

Between the deadline and results

For Magnet, the selection process page says applications are processed and high school applicants' scores are calculated to decide who enters the lottery. Preferences apply only to a first choice, on time application, and at the secondary level the student must also meet the program's qualifications. The five Magnet preferences are sibling (not when siblings apply to the same school the same year), geographic, feeder, transportation (not for Veterans Tribute CTA or Advanced Technologies Academy), and continuum, which gives grade 5 students at Gordon McCaw STEM Academy priority at Lyal Burkholder Academy of Environmental Science. Open Enrollment gives a sibling preference on the first choice, on time application, the FAQs say. The selection process page has the full wording, and late applications get no preferences.

On the Open Enrollment process page, CCSD recommends selecting both text and email as contact methods in your guardian account. Do that now.

What do Selected, Alternate Pool, and Not Qualified mean?

Log in to the parent dashboard in SchoolMint after the notice arrives. The two process pages list these results:

Selected. Your student was offered a seat. Click the green Accept button to take it. You should get an email confirming the acceptance. If none arrives, log back in and make sure the acceptance recorded.

Alternate Pool. More students applied than there were seats. No action is needed. If a seat opens, the district contacts you through the School Choice application system, and the Magnet page adds that the school will contact you too. Open Enrollment seats may be offered through the tenth day of the school year.

Not Qualified. This appears on Magnet results when the student did not meet a program's criteria. The Magnet page says you may contact the school about it.

Is there a deadline to accept?

Yes, and the district sets it in the notice, not on the public pages. The Open Enrollment FAQs say parents "must respond through the mechanism provided by the District by the specified date after notification." Write that date down the day results arrive.

Miss it and the seat is auto declined. You can appeal to see whether a seat is still available; the FAQs say the appeal is granted if a seat exists, and the student stays in the pool if it doesn't. Appeals are accepted only within the application timelines.

What does a Magnet seat commit you to?

Read the Magnet Program Expectations page before you click Accept. It says the magnet or CTA "becomes the student's assigned school once enrolled." It also says withdrawal "is not permitted during the school year," so a student can leave only at the end of the year. The student must stay in the program of study they enrolled in.

The page sets standards that can lead to probation:

  • Grades, grades 6 to 12: at least a 2.0 GPA each semester. A D or F can mean academic probation, and a semester GPA under 2.0 two semesters in a row can lead to dismissal.

  • Attendance: 10 or more absences in a semester, excused or unexcused, or 8 on a block schedule, means attendance probation.

  • Behavior: a Required Parent Conference or a suspension means probation. An expulsion referral can lead to dismissal.

A student who doesn't meet probation terms may be dismissed at the end of the school year or before the next one, the page says. It also warns that an athlete who returns to the zoned school "may be ineligible" for the rest of that year plus 180 school days in any sport rostered at the magnet school. CCSD Insider's sports eligibility guide has the details.

What happens to my other applications when I accept?

They end. A student selected by more than one School Choice option may accept only one invitation. Once you accept, the student is removed from all other Magnet, Open Enrollment, and Central Technical Training Academy alternate and late lotteries, per the Magnet application process page.

A family that accepts and then changes its mind can appeal for the other offered seat, and the Open Enrollment FAQs say that appeal is granted only if the seat still exists.

Not selected anywhere

Stay in the alternate pool and look at late applications.

Magnet late applications open the first Monday after spring break, March 22, 2027, and run through the tenth day of the school year at 3:00 p.m., per the late application page. Late applications are processed only after a school has exhausted its on time applicants, including its on time alternate pool. No preferences apply. You can't reapply to a program you chose on time, and a student who already accepted another School Choice seat isn't considered. Status may sit at "Lottery Status: Application Submitted" for long stretches because each magnet school processes late applications on its own schedule.

For Open Enrollment, the Open Enrollment page lists the 2027 late window as March 22 through August 20, 2027, at 3:00 p.m. The FAQs describe the same window as running "through the tenth day of the school year." File by August 20 at 3:00 p.m. A family denied on time may apply to another school with space during that window or to available magnet programs, the FAQs say.

If an Open Enrollment application isn't acted on, the FAQs allow an appeal to the Superintendent, decided on space only. The decision is final.

After you accept

Enroll. The Open Enrollment process page says to follow the school's enrollment steps once the seat is accepted, and the FAQs say a student who doesn't enroll by the specified deadline loses the seat and attends the zoned school. The new school becomes the home school of record, and the family agrees to stay at least one year. Magnet carries its own full year commitment, described above and in the Magnet FAQs.

Transportation is separate. Open Enrollment comes with no CCSD bus. Magnet buses depend on the transportation zone, covered in CCSD Insider's School Choice open window guide.
