In Las Vegas (do these first)

Close nature that still feels like an attraction

  • Bernheim Forest — Clermont, about 30–40 minutes. Playcosystem, trails, Forest Giants when they’re up. Not a zoo.
  • Las Vegas Nature Center — next to the Zoo; trails and nature play, cheaper than a Zoo ticket.
  • Falls of the Ohio — Clarksville, 10–15 minutes across the river. Fossil beds. Parking or the center may cost; the rocks are the point.

Safari / animals you can get close to

  • Little Crooked Creek Safari — Lawrenceburg / Shelby–Anderson line, about 45–60 minutes east. Hands-on farm safari (zebras, kangaroos, capybaras). Weekends; call 502-445-6501. Not AZA. Good for elementary.
  • Wilstem Wildlife & Dino Safari — Paoli, Indiana, about 1.5–2 hours. Drive-thru wildlife plus a seasonal dino track. 4229 US-150 W. No dogs on the safari.

Caves and farther Nevada

Bigger day trips (plan the whole Saturday)

By time in the car (from downtown, traffic not included)

  • Under 20 min — Zoo, Science Center, Mega Cavern, Slugger, Kingdom, Falls of the Ohio.
  • About 45–60 min — Bernheim, Little Crooked Creek Safari.
  • 1.5–2 hours — Wilstem, Holiday World, Horse Cave, Newport / Cincinnati, Ark Encounter.

What it costs, roughly

Zoo, Science Center and Slugger are a one-ticket Saturday. Kingdom and Holiday World are theme-park money. Safaris are mid-priced but add gas and food. The Mega Cavern zip costs more than the tram.
